Spring Cleaning Tips for Pet Owners – Keeping A Clean Home

If you have pets, you probably love them like they’re your child. However, just like a child, you have to clean up after them… and it can be a mess to handle! Pets track dirt, dander, pollen, hair, mud, and plenty of other allergens into our homes, and since allergy season is about to be in full swing, it’s time to get a head start on your spring cleaning. Sometimes, simple solutions can go a long way in keeping you and your family healthy and happy inside your home, and that’s what we’re here to share with you! Read these spring cleaning tips for pet owners, and keep a clean home this season.

Routine Cleaning

A few quick tips on keeping your home clean throughout the season is to get ahead of your cleaning early, especially if you have indoor pets. Dusting and vacuuming regularly and routinely grooming your pets during the spring can greatly reduce the amount of pet hair and dander that is being recirculated throughout your house. You’ll also want to dust your vents and change your air filters regularly as well. Let’s go into these points further below.

Keep Your Pets Groomed

While keeping your pets groomed isn’t necessarily ‘cleaning’, it definitely helps with the cleaning process! Regular haircuts, baths, and brushing cut down on the amount of pet hair and dander that gets shed into your home throughout the year. You can even wash pets in a de-shedding shampoo if they release a large amount of pet hair into your home all the time. While you may not be able to see pet dander, if you can see pet hair, know that the pet dander is there as well.

Keep Good Air Flow

Pet hair, dander, and other allergens will get caught by your air filter and get stuck in your air vents all throughout the year, but especially during spring. Be sure you clean your air vents regularly by dusting or washing, and be sure you change your air filter every 1-3 months. If your air filter gets clogged, it could cause unhealthy air flow, little to no air flow, or even shut your system down completely. Change those air filters!

Vacuum & Dust

Vacuuming and dusting helps keep allergens from settling in your home. Allergens that you can’t even see can linger on countertops, tabletop decor, cabinets, light fixtures, appliances, tables, floors, and more. Vacuuming and dusting should be done at least weekly to ensure dust, pet dander, dirt, and other allergens are not settling, building up, and causing issues for allergy sufferers in your home.

Declutter & Deep Clean

Now that you’ve handled aspects of what should be routine cleaning, it’s time to get to the deep spring clean! Follow these checkpoints as you go through each room of your home.

    • Pick up dog toys and toss washable ones in the washing machine.
    • Pick up your pet’s bedding from around the house and toss that in the washing machine as well.
    • AFTER washing your pet’s bedding, wash your own bedding and blankets that need it.
    • Do an appropriate deep clean of your couch depending on the material type.
    • Deodorize the couch and carpets with baking soda.
    • Sweep and mop throughout your home, especially by outside doors.
    • Clean out litter boxes or change out pee pads.
